Department of Electric Drive & Control Engineering

        Department of Electric Drive & Control Engineering (referred to as the electric control department ) is mainly responsible for the professional teaching and research tasks of power electronics and electric drive, detection technology and automatic equipment。 Currently it has 3 professors, 3 PhD supervisor; 7 associate professors. It recruits doctoral students and graduate students in two disciplines of electrical engineering, and control science and engineering.
Department of Electric Drive & Control Engineering, formerly known as the Department of Electrical Engineering, founded in 1986, was renamed in 2004 as Department of Electric Drive & Control. After years of accumulation and development, the department carries out teaching and research work in the secondary disciplines of Power Electronics and Electric Drive, Detection Technology and Automation, Electrotechnics  Theory and New Technology, Transport Apparatus Operation engineering. It has accumulated a number of scientific research results and trained a number of national urgently required high-tech talented professionals in rail transit traction drive equipment, train communication networks, sensor networks and network control, energy saving devices, computer monitoring and control systems, etc.
Electric control department in the past five years led one National Natural Science Foundation Key Project, two surface projects; 4 National 863 Project, 6 National Science and Technology Support Project, three key projects of the Ministry of Railways, one key project of the Ministry of Education, 16 national invention patents. Undertaken national research tasks, patents for inventions, and other indicators are among the forefront of the equivalent departments and institutes in the domestic electrical engineering field. 
PART I  Teaching and student training work
1)Teaching work
Electric control department is undertaking 5 undergraduate main courses (automatic control theory, circuits, analog electronics, digital electronics, power electronics technology); and undertaking the undergraduate teaching and academic research work in electric traction control technology, modern control theory, signal and systems, computer networks, fieldbus, sensor technology, electrical measuring technology, embedded systems, power electronics application technology, computer simulation, electrical control and PLC, electric drive automatic control system, AC motor variable frequency control, etc. Electric control department has one Beijing Demonstrated Practice Base; it can organize half of the school undergraduates to internship every year.
Electric control department also undertakes postgraduate courses, including degree courses of power electronic circuits and systems, data communication and control networks, modern control theory, etc.
Academic researchers in electric control department not only are responsible for heavy teaching tasks, but also actively carry out research work about teaching and have achieved some iconic teaching achievement awards, including:

  • Dr. Ye Jingjing has acquired the Eighth Beijing Youth Teacher Teaching Basic Skills third prize
  • Professor Wang Lide guided students to achieve the first National Undergraduate "Energy Saving& Emission Reduction" Social Practice and Technology Competition first prize
  • Dr. Wang Xin has achieved the Sixth Beijing Jiaotong University Youth Teacher Teaching Basic Skills first prize。
  • Ten teachers of Wang Lide, Qiu Ruichang, Hu Xiaogang, Tang Yupeng, Huang Yu, Zhang Hesheng, Ye Jingjing, Wang Xin, Xu Chunmei, Li Xingchun have been rated as the university Outstanding Teaching Performance.

PART II  Main research results 
I Rail transit traction drive and energy-feedback power supply equipment 
United with many well-known research institutions and enterprises such as CNR Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd,Xi’an Railway Signal Co., Ltd,Beijing Qiansiyu Electric Co., Ltd,Beijing Urban Engineering Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd,Beijing Subway Co., Guangzhou Metro Co., the Rail Transit Equipment Research Group of Department of Electric Drive & Control Engineering has carried out close and effective Production & Research Cooperation in metro traction,low-floor light rail vehicle traction,energy feedback traction power supply for urban transit, linear induction motor(LIM) rail transit and the safety of high-speed railway, etc. The Research Group has grasp key technologies including electric traction system modeling for rail transit,4-Quadrant converter control,traction electric machine converter control,high-frequency auxiliary power, optimized adhesion utilization,fault detect and diagnosis,network monitoring,damage assessment & life prediction,security prediction and control, dynamic maintenance and has achieved a series of innovation efforts. 
1Traction and auxiliary converter system of low-floor light rail vehicles 
The equipment is based on the “Eleventh Five-Year” national scientific and technological support plan key project--the research and development of 100%low-floor light rail vehicle.
It provides electric traction and auxiliary converter system for the first 100% low-floor light rail vehicle of our country with completely self-research. It uses advanced technologies such as vector control and digital high frequency control with the characteristics of compact structure,modularization,lightweight,low noise,hommization etc. The equipment has completed 5000km standard line running experiment in Changchun Light Rail Transit, now is the running stage of with on-board passengers.
 
The first 100% low-floor light rail of our country has been put into operation; Completely independent intellectual property rights of traction and auxiliary converter system
2) Subway A type traction and auxiliary converter  
The subway traction converter is based on the National the Eleventh Five-year Plan Project: ‘the development of the system of urban rail traffic energy-feedback traction power supply and traction drives’, (NO.2007BAA12B07 ), which has the completely independent intellectual property rights and is applied into the system of subway traction drives to drive and control the motors. It has the characteristics of modularization, lightweight, low noise and so on, which can totally take the place of the imported system .
This equipment has passed the standard test of product checking center of engine and vehicle of Ministry of Railway and has finished the on board test of Guangzhou Metro Line 1.

3Energy-feedback Traction Power Supply Equipment
Energy-feedback traction power supply equipment is based on the latest scientific and technological achievements of National the Eleventh Five-year Plan Project: ‘the development of the system of urban rail traffic energy-feedback traction power supply and traction drives’, (NO.2007BAA12B07 ), which gathers the characteristics of energy-feedback,traction power supply, high power supply quality and the compensation of power factor and harmonics. It has high performance-price ratio.
This equipment has passed the standard test of product checking center of engine and vehicle of Ministry of Railway in April,2010 and has finished the netting test in the new depot of Guangzhou Metro Line 4 in March, 2011. The trial operation in Beijing and Tianjin will be tried soon.

4Traction Converter for Linear Electric motors 
Traction Converter for linear electric motors is the newest scientific and technological achievement,which is based on the national Eleventh Five-Year Plan(Project:’ Development of the key technology and equipment for the new type linear electric motors transporting system’,NO.2008 BAG11B00).It is used for applying AC power that linear electric motors need.It adopts a vector control method compensated the end effect and realize high-performance traction control of linear electric motors.
The equipment was tested in the test wire of the new type linear electric motor transporting system in the city of Hohhot in the Nei Monggol Autonomous Region and has been working for 3 years. Each function reaches the designed target.

Train control communications network 
Traction Control and Network Research group of Electric control department, in Train Communication Network (TCN, ARCNET, etc.), rail transport fault detection and diagnostic systems, automatic testing, has carried out in-depth cooperation with CSR Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd., CSR Puzhen Rolling Stock Co., Ltd., CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute Co., Ltd., CNR Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd., Dalian locomotive Co., Ltd., Kunming Railway, Taiyuan Railway Bureau and other units , developed a number of products with independent intellectual property rights and technology platforms, formed our own professional characteristics, conducted in-depth theoretical studies and published a series of academic research papers in 
real-time train communication network and reliability, the comprehensive monitoring of rail vehicles, high-speed train condition monitoring and fault diagnosis fields. 
1) Independent developed train communication network core equipment
         Relying on Science and Technology Development Programs of the Ministry of Railways with Universities& Enterprises , the group independently developed a series of independent intellectual property rights of TCN equipments based on SOPC technology, and they have been applied in the field of rail transportation in the Kunming Railway SS3B electric locomotive, and the Beijing subway  line 15.

 

 

2)Web-based vehicle fault diagnosis system
         By technical means, the main objective of the system is to accomplish the fault monitoring and diagnosis of key components of locomotives to detect and determine the fault position, record the failure process, through the cab display screen and other methods send an alarm and prompt troubleshooting methods or make recommendations about how to take emergency measures to the driver and conductors. The system has been installed and used in the East Lake depot, Taiyuan Railway Bureau, Kunming depot of Kunming Railway Bureau; the operation is well, and it has made ??remarkable economic and social benefits. The system was exhibited in the Ninth China International Modern Railway Technology and Equipment Exhibition in 2010 and 2011, and the 14th China Beijing International Science and Technology Industrial Expo; it attracted widespread attention.

III Sensor networks, electric drive system network control
Traffic Information and Networked Control(TINC) Research Center of Electric control department, mainly undertakes research and development work in sensor networks, electric drive system network control, condition monitoring, field bus, and other aspects. Research center cooperated with CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd., Shenyang Railway Bureau, Xi'an Railway Bureau, Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, carried out the research and development of road traffic information collected by sensor networks, network control and status monitoring system of the electric drive system, distributed sewage flow monitoring system.
1) Road Traffic information acquisition sensor networks
Relying on the National 863 Project and National Natural Science Foundation project, the road traffic information acquisition wireless sensor nodes, ad-hoc network nodes, multi-function gateway nodes have been developed, and the system passed the test on the actual road.

2Network control and status monitoring of the electric drive system
Based on Ethernet, the remote network control of the electric drive system, and network transmission of the electric drive system condition monitoring have been realized.

IV Energy saving and emission reduction 
Electric control department actively carries out long-term research in the energy-saving technologies, especially the energy-saving of hybrid car integrated control, energy-saving motors of new energy vehicles, the energy-saving of asynchronous motor running, etc. In the aspect of reducing emissions, the department developed the distributed wastewater flow monitoring system, remote distributed monitoring system.
1) hybrid electric passenger vehicle and control technology
Cooperating with the Department of Automotive Engineering at Tsinghua University, and relying on the Beijing Science and Technology Project with Universities & Enterprises, for city bus used uniaxial parallel hybrid system, the department formed a series of technologies of the system design, matching, integration, development and testing. Power systems include engine, clutch, gearbox, power lithium battery, motor and vehicle control module; in which the power lithium batteries and their management systems, vehicle control modules are all self-developed domestic equipments. Currently the prototype has been running for more than ten thousand kilometers; compared with the same type of conventional bus, under the equivalent driving comfort and smoothness situation, the average oil saving rate exceeds more than 25%.

2Sewage flow monitoring system
Relying on key projects of the Ministry of Railways: Railway pollutant emission monitoring key technology research, the department developed the distributed wide-area monitoring system of the sewage flow. The system has passed the laboratory testing and installed in Shenyang Railway Bureau.
